Tricks To Cool Your Home During The Summer

By James Miller

Summertime is here! It's hot and miserable outside so we naturally want to find someplace cooler to spend our time. We can stay dry and cool in our houses but that means paying high electric bills due to the cost of running our AC all the time.

Don't fret because there are some things you can do to keep your house cool while still saving cash. Here are a just some of the many inexpensive ways you can help your air conditioner work less in the middle of the summer.

Shades on Windows and Doors: Sunlight streaming in through your windows can heat your house like an oven. You'll be amazed at how much cooler your house can be with the well thought-out placement of a few light-blocking shades over your sunniest windows. Regular shades probably aren't enough. You'll want to use a full light-blocking blind. Most light-blocking blinds actually have a thick cloth liner built into them. You can keep your regular decorative curtains in place, just be sure to also use light blocking curtains on the same window or doorway. Blocking out that light during the warmest part of the day can make a dramatic difference in cooling.

Inspect your AC Filters: Both window AC units and central air conditioners need to have their air filters regularly replaced. If your air filter is really dirty it could actually cause your air conditioner blower to break down which could end up being expensive to fix. A blocked air filter can prevent air from being blown efficiently by your AC unit. You'll want to check your air filters once a month and follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning and replacing your air filters regularly. This is probably one of the single most important central AC maintenance tips.

Seal and Insulate: If you have window air conditioning units you may want to make sure they are installed securely and have no openings around the installation hardware. If you have a central AC then you should go over as much of the aluminum vent system as you can. You can inspect all your windows and doors searching for small openings where cool air could slip out. You may also want to close the air duct registers and close the doors in rooms you don't use so that your AC doesn't have to try to cool those rooms too.

Using these energy saving tips in unison with one another can really help you save money on your energy bills and keep you comfortable during the summer. These are just some of the many home cooling methods you can use to stay comfortable inside during the hottest days of the summer months. All of these home cooling methods will help keep your house interior cooler and help your AC keep running well all summer long.
