By Jim Frame

Firstly, lets quickly define a commercial vehicle. The experts say that it's main function is to transport people, for instance taxis or small buses and the function is also to cart various goods from one point to another. Lets assume that you have just bought your prized possession, namely a commercial van. You have all sorts of ideas on how you are going to build and grown your business around your vehicle. Everything is in place except one small headache - getting van insurance.

Naturally, you are cognizant that vehicle insurance is a monumental industry, inundated with brokers and agents who are keen to write up an insurance policy just for you.

So where do you start? To answer your question we need to first discuss why it is important to have insurance, in order for you to make sound decisions when the time comes to choosing an insurance company.

We are aware that vehicle insurance is an absolute in many countries and one cannot operate a business if you cannot prove insurance. Consider the following:

Who ever drives your vehicle must be covered to protect them when accidents happen and bodily injury is serious. Here you could spend your last dime to pay for his medical bills and related costs.

Having said that, you would want to avoid legal ramifications caused by you not having the correct insurance in place. This no doubt is one of the most costly to your business and can actually ruin your business if you had to pay for legal costs.

You will need to have a goods in transit policy as well, where all your stock is covered on the of chance the vehicle is in an accident, or an accident was caused by an exterior party for instance bad weather or an airplane falling from the sky.

Should your van be stolen or destroyed by fire or whatever the reason, you would want your policy to cover this by paying out the replacement value of the vehicle, or replacing the vehicle with another one which has the same value.

It is advisable to have a tailor-made policy in place, one that takes any special needs into account. Don...apos;t settle for a generic run of the mill policy. It could cost you dearly. But, make sure that included is the general third party and fire cover - not just third part.

Your insurance company should also provide you with immediate cover, breakdown cover, courtesy vehicle and a no claims discount. Also ensure that your policy has cover for more than one driver at work.

Keep in mind that you or your family are not insured while driving this vehicle, unless otherwise stated in the policy. They usually have an option for a dedicated driver like your employees and others. Keep an eye out for that one.

Notwithstanding, there are many different insurers with many different rates and policies that could make your van insurance a pleasant one. You need to be diligent in getting everything your business needs under one comprehensive policy.
